The capabilities of the Volvo electromobility solution are the focus of RTA’s trial operation, which will test Opportunity Charging, fast charging on the road, for the first time in Dubai. As part of the collaboration, the two Volvo electric buses will travel on a specifically designed route to test the new electric charging infrastructure set up in collaboration with ABB between the La Mer and Al Sufouh stations with stops along the way.
In addition, the effect of the region’s road terrain, temperatures, and higher need for air conditioning on the Volvo Buses energy storage systems will be closely monitored. The drivers have been trained specifically on how to operate the electric buses.
Manish Sahi, Vice President Volvo Buses says: “The energy efficiency and technological capacity of the electric solution is central to our trial in Dubai. This unique partnership between Volvo Buses and the RTA will provide us with significant data and insights for the future operation of electric buses in hot climate conditions.”
As quoted in the recent press release from RTA Dubai, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, Mr. Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer mentions the project to be a unique collaboration between government agencies and the private sector and marks a significant step towards delivering sustainable transport solutions in line with the Dubai government’s energy and carbon reduction strategy by 2030. Volvo’s wide experience and competence in this area will be invaluable during the transition.
The trial follows Volvo Buses recent global tests of the Volvo electromobility solutions in warm climates with an ambient temperature often exceeding 40°C, and buses operating at full capacity.
This partnership with RTA in Dubai illustrates the success of Volvo's turnkey solutions offering quiet, zero-emission buses, charging infrastructure and servicing.
