Volvo Buses has received a large order for 46 electric buses from Transdev in the Netherlands, where they will help electrify public transport in the city of Utrecht. It is the largest order for complete electric Volvo buses to date since its formal collaboration with bodybuilder MCV started.

“We are extremely happy that we can now share the fact that earlier this year, Transdev chose us as a partner to continue to electrify Utrecht. We have worked together for a long time, and it is very rewarding to see it result in an order for 46 electric buses,” says Bas Dubois, Managing Director, Volvo Buses Benelux.

The new buses will feature a completely new design at the front of the vehicle as well as several new functions for increased driver comfort and safety. This includes a new driver’s station with a dynamic instrument cluster and redesigned control panel which help the driver stay focused and free of distraction. They are also equipped with the latest active safety systems from Volvo Buses, with a strong focus on safeguarding unprotected road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

In addition, the agreement with Transdev includes a Usable Energy Commitment, under which Volvo Buses guarantees the required energy to run the buses for the next ten years.

“In order to operate electric buses, you need to take into account several different parameters that affect energy consumption, and with the Usable Energy Commitment, we ensure Transdev will get the energy they need to run their operation,” says Bas Dubois. “Overall, this order shows the confidence Transdev has in Volvo Buses as a strong partner for operating electrified public transport.”

The buses are scheduled to go into service in Utrecht on the morning of 14 December 2025. The chassis will be manufactured in Volvo Buses’ plant in Borås, Sweden and the bodies will be made by Volvo Buses’ partner MCV.
