First all-electric Volvo order secured with Arriva London for 51 BZL Electric Double Deck buses

Volvo Buses has landed its first all-electric order with Arriva London. It will see 51 Volvo BZL Electric Double Deck buses, in the capital’s famous red livery, join the operator’s Tottenham garage.

Arriva London’s zero tailpipe emission Volvos will operate on its newly contracted 341 and 243 routes across Tottenham, transporting passengers between Meridian Water, Wood Green and Waterloo. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2025.

Marcos Hart, Managing Director London at Arriva UK Bus says: "Arriva UK Bus is committed to decarbonising our fleet in London, and this most recent order with Volvo builds on the millions of pounds we have already invested in creating the clean, electrified and efficient public transport networks that communities in the capital deserve."

Offering improved comfort and quieter journeys, each of the new 10.9m BZL Electric Double Deck buses will be bodied by MCV to Transport for London specifications. For convenience, travellers can also enjoy high-back seats, USB charging points and glass skylights on the upper deck create a lighter, brighter interior. Arriva drivers will also benefit from the reduced noise and vibration which the BZL Electric driveline brings, contributing to a calmer workspace.

Domenico Bondi, Managing Director of Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, says: “As our industry embraces electromobility, we prioritise sustainability, safety, and reliability throughout our processes – from material sourcing and manufacturing to operation and recycling. So, we’re proud and excited to be supplying Arriva London with all-electric buses in that instantly recognisable red livery!”

Arriva London also benefits from Volvo Buses’ specific London Field Service Technical Team, providing on-site aftermarket support to its operators in the capital. They are further supported by three Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East dealerpoints around the capital, including London North (Enfield), London Heathrow (Hayes) and London South (Croydon), ensuring Genuine Volvo Parts are provided quickly and technical work or advice is available around the clock.

“Our relationship with Arriva stretches back years and our respective teams have collaborated to meet the requirements from TfL and help reduce emissions in the capital. I can’t wait to spot our Volvo BZL Double Deck buses on the roads next year,” adds Bondi.

The new buses will be powered by Volvo’s 200kW electric driveline, featuring an electric motor paired with a two-stage automated gearbox. Each bus is equipped with five lithium-ion batteries, providing a total of 470kW/h of onboard energy storage. The range of these buses can be extended during operation due to the regenerative braking system, which recovers a portion of the energy that would otherwise be lost during deceleration, converting it into free, clean energy.

Arriva London is part of the Arriva UK Bus business line and operates 98 bus routes from 16 garages across London under contract to Transport for London. The division transports nearly 300 million passengers a year over more than 50 million miles. The activities of parent company Arriva are divided into four lines of business: UK Bus, UK Trains, The Netherlands and Mainland Europe. The group employs 34,500 people and delivers around 1.6 billion passenger journeys across 10 European countries, through buses, trains, coaches, trams, waterbuses, bike-sharing systems, and on-demand transport solutions.
