Charging & Batteries

Volvo offers charging technologies that allow you to combine and change your charging methods. Furthermore, we offer energy storage capacity in a new and safeguarding way. With our useable energy commitment, you make sure that operation will continue according to your schedule – year after year. All based on your operational requirements.

Forget about the batteries

Volvo Buses offers a useable energy commitment, by which we assure that the defined amount of energy for operation on the route can be available from day one to the end of the contract period. So, you need not worry about battery size or health.

Start with the route

The basis for the useable energy commitment is real-life route data and an analysis done jointly by Volvo and the operator. The result is an agreed figure of the energy required and a charging scheme, which will ensure reliable operation.

Right-sizing your energy storage

Traction batteries are costly and resource-intensive. From a sustainability perspective there are good reasons to optimise the energy storage and avoid carrying battery cells as dead weight. Right-sizing is a matter of system design where the vehicle, the infrastructure and the charging patterns are cornerstones.

Leave it to Volvo

Electrifying a public transport system is more than just replacing vehicles. Volvo offers support and thorough analysis of routes, energy need and other prerequisites. The result is a system solution, based on real-life requirements, ensuring operation according to schedule all through the operators contract period.

Charging flexibility

Our range of electric buses are ready for quick high-power charging on route, as well as manually operated depot charging via CCS cable. You can even specify different locations on the bus for the CCS socket. This way you can optimise your charging routines and tailor charging patterns to suit your schedules and your fleets daily operation.

Depot charging

Volvo's electric buses can be manually charged using a CCS cable in the depot, during breaks, off-peak or at night. The buses can be equipped with plug-in sockets in several locations to suit your depot layout. Double plug-in points are also available on some models.

Pantograph – up or down

Flexibility and interoperability are cornerstones in efficient public transport operation. Some of our models can be specified with a roof-mounted charging pantograph, instead of the OppCharge roof rails. Giving operators freedom of choice.
