Over the last years, bus safety has become a major concern and focus for the Hong Kong government and bus operators. Due to a number of bus accidents, the government has actively engaged bus OEM’s in order to improve the safety of buses.
As safety is a core value for the Volvo brand, Volvo Buses made the decision to host a transport luncheon, for a second year in a row, creating a great opportunity for Volvo Buses to understand Hong Kong public transport needs, share the Volvo Group safety vision and philosophy, and to pledge support to make Hong Kong transport safer. “We believe that organising these events gives us as Volvo a unique opportunity to hear from the passengers, operators and regulators – their needs and concerns. We are assembling the brightest minds from across various industry stakeholders to promote discussion on key issues – in this case safety” says Akash Passey, Volvo Buses Senior Vice President, Region International.
The Deputy Consulate General of Sweden in Hong Kong, Mr Joakim Ladeborn, opened the event followed by Volvo Buses President, Håkan Agnevall’s inaugural address. “The Volvo Group safety vision is zero accidents with Volvo Group products. The safety vision provides a distinct direction for all our safety work, in all business operations and in all markets. Our vision of zero accidents is a way of thinking, a mental image of an optimum future state. We are committed to always striving towards zero accidents with Volvo Group products” said Håkan Agnevall.
William Shum, Acting Chief E&M Engineer of Transport Department, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, was also in attendance to share insight into the work the Hong Kong government are completing - which will see new safety requirements introduced to buses.
Also in attendance to share Volvo Group’s vision was Anna Wrige Berling, Director of Traffic Situation Management. Anna has over 15 years’ experience working with traffic and vehicle safety within the Volvo Group and therefore played a key role in addressing the importance of alert and safe drivers.
To summarise the day, a panel discussion was led by Volvo Buses which gave attendees the opportunity to discuss how together, we can join hands to improve safety in Hong Kong’s public bus system.
